Cowdenbeath Refurbishment  Centre

Centre Manager: Rob Isbister

Phone: 01383 511704
Email: scotland@twam.uk

Address: Unit 3, Block 4, Woodend Industrial Estate,

Cowdenbeath, Fife  KY4 8HW

Opening times: Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 3pm.

We're a small but very busy unit.  We have just taken on a new role within TWAM of being the first tool kit only assembling centre.  This means we only collect a limited number of tools, which we sort and refurbish so we only send down to Ipswich completed tool kits ready to go out to Africa.  We refurbish all sorts of tools, sewing machines and computers.

We have a modern unit, with an office where we have a fridge for refreshments.  There is plenty of parking outside.

We're open two days a week, but with extra volunteers are looking to open four days.  We're always looking for new people to join our friendly team.

If you want to find out what we do and what you could do to help, please give us a ring or just pop in.  It would be great to see you.

Welcome to Cowdenbeath

What attracted you to TWAM and to this role in particular?

Scotland’s regional manager met my wife by chance some 7 years ago and suggested that I join TWAM.  After some years, the branch was looking for a replacement manager. I didn't feel capable of this role but with our foreman (now assistant manager) and accountant by my side, I have managed so far!

Tell us briefly a little about a typical day for you at the centre?

I answer calls and emails referring to collectors or HQ, arrange purchases and payments for things  not dealt with by the accountant and I might visit the bank or the metals reclamation centre with the trailer.  I also help look after the kitchen and wash room and if I still have time after that may do some tool refurbishment or metal separation work.

What attracted you to TWAM and to this role in particular?

TWAM was suggested to me as a great place to volunteer by a social worker who was trying to help me get back into paid employment.  I thought it was a really good idea to help a charity with my skills and knowing I am helping someone have a better life, but to help myself at the same time by giving myself more confidence by socialising with other volunteers.

What is your favourite thing about volunteering?

I enjoy working with other volunteers as we work as a team and combine our skills to achieve positive outcomes.

Why would you recommend volunteering with TWAM to other people?

I would recommend people to volunteer with TWAM as it gives a great opportunity to socialise with others.  It also gives you a great opportunity to put your own skills to work again, being able to work at your own pace and to  feel comfortable and happy whilst doing good.
